Electrodes tend to come in two main types: The Ignition Electrode (sometimes known as the Spark Electrode) and the Flame sensing Electrode. The Spark Electrode uses an electronically generated spark to ignite the gases within the combustion chamber. The Flame Sensing Electrode makes sure that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present within the combustion chamber. This important safety feature stop gas from being supplied if the flame has been extinguished.
